The North Queensland Cowboys joined the Australian Rugby League competition in 1995 during a period of optimistic expansion.  The club almost immediately jumped to the breakaway Super League competition, but struggled for much of its early existence.

In 2005, a young halfback named Johnathan Thurston joined the club from Canterbury, and guided the club to the 2005 Grand Final.  Thurston became one of the greatest players of the modern era, and was still at the club when they broke through for their first premiership victory.
