The Gold Coast has been the home of two separate rugby league teams over the last thirty years.  First joining as the Giants in 1988, the struggling club competed as the Seagulls and the Chargers, before folding at the end of the 1998 season; a victim of Super League.

A new franchise, known as the Titans joined the National Rugby League competition in 2007, and attracted players such as Preston Campbell, Luke Bailey, Scott Prince, and Mat Rogers.
